John Maxwell once said, ‘A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.’ This quote got me reflecting on what true leadership means, not just in the boardroom, but in everyday life. It’s easy to think of leadership as a title or position, but Maxwell’s words remind us that leadership is more about action and influence than authority.
I realized that at times, I’ve been guilty of confusing busyness with being a leader. I thought that just by being occupied with tasks, I was leading effectively. Maxwell’s insight nudged me to look beyond my to-do list and think about how I was truly impacting my team and the people around me. Was I actually showing them the way?
Taking this to heart, I decided to shift my focus from just getting things done to actively guiding and empowering others. I started with small gestures, like taking time to listen and providing mentorship. Seeing a colleague successfully tackle a challenge after I’ve shown them the ropes has been incredibly rewarding.
Maxwell’s wisdom also applies to self-leadership. If we don’t know where we’re headed or how to get there, how can we expect to lead others? I’ve begun setting clearer personal goals and mapping out steps to reach them. In doing so, I’m better equipped to lead both myself and those who look to me for guidance.
In the end, Maxwell’s quote beautifully encapsulates the essence of leadership as a journey rather than a destination. Let’s all strive to be leaders who know, go, and show the way.
